so much straw

Today many Christians remember Thomas Aquinas, one of Christianity’s great minds. Near the end of his life and before completing his most ambitious written work, they say Aquinas described an experience at the Lord’s Table: “Such things have been revealed to me that all that I have written seems to me as so much straw.” And that was the end of his work to interpret and organize the faith for us.

I s’pose the rest of us will just have to keep writing until we are so graced.

I haven’t read much of his theology, which is nothing to brag about, but I’ve always liked this prayer attributed to him:

Give us, Lord, a steadfast heart, one which no unworthy affection may drag down.
Give us an unconquered heart, one which no difficulty can wear out.
Give us an upright heart, one which no unworthy purpose may tempt into moving aside.
Lord our God, give upon us also understanding to know you,
diligence to seek you,
wisdom to find you,
and faithfulness that may finally embrace you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
