“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
It is unnerving how Jesus walks so steadily into the events we observe this week. His tears in the garden show the agony with which he sets aside his own will and takes on the Father’s, but every step of the way, he chooses to trust the Father. When challenged, when beaten, he is somehow able to simply state the truth – who he knows himself fully to be – and endure whatever may come as those around him rage against God in their midst.
Where is the defense? Where is the self-justification? Where is the “third way” alternative?
Where is the justice?
We watch this unfold, an act of true love that expects nothing in exchange for this great gift.
And we wait for God to reveal whether this was the right thing to do, or not. And, if it is, come Sunday, then what other way would we want it?
